My New Implants

Updated: Jul 23, 2023

Quick update. I am in the room at MUSC Charleston. I get my own room (Woo-hoo!) and it has a hospital bed, recliner, couch and bathroom with walk in shower. The IV is hooked up to my new cancer port and they are giving me saline for now. They will start the actual cancer drugs in a couple of hours.

This chemo port is pretty cool! Think of it as a pin-cushion implanted under my skin, which feeds into a vein leading to my heart. Once installed, it is permanent. Anytime they need to draw blood or give me fluids, they pop a right angle needle down through my skin into the pin-cushion, which seals around it. Then they just tape the housing to my arm for the whole time I am admitted. But when I leave, they just pull the needle out vertically, pop a bandaid on, and an hour later I can go swimming! (I mean, not that I actually WOULD.) Much more comfortable than finding a vein each time. This video shows how it works:

I am warm, fed, feeling no pain, and in the company of a hot young red-head. I am richly blessed.

It's a very good day.
