True Story:
My wife is sick and I have definitely been better, so I imposed on our teenage son to make us chicken soup from scratch. He was skeptical, but dutifully complied. He stewed a chicken with vegetables in the crock pot overnight, and deboned it during lunch. I had him put all that nice meat in the fridge while he cooked vegetables for the broth. Then we went back to work.
After work, he had a prior commitment, so I finished up, by making noodles and tweaking the broth. It was decent -- just not quite right. I couldn't quite figure it out! More salt? Definitely. More parmesan cheese? MOST definitely. Too much celery? 'Much too late now... I kept messing with it and finally gave up and decided to eat. I was 3/4 done with my bowl when I figured out what it was.
I had forgotten to add the chicken.
